Skyler Daniel Boring was a co-captain and state-ranked wrestler for Heritage High School in Maryville, TN. He was a 2013 graduate of Heritage High School. On May 28, 2013, Skyler was killed in a tragic shooting incident in Maryville. Skyler wrestled from 7th grade through 12th grade for Heritage High School. He helped Heritage High School get to two state championships in a row in 2012 and 2013. It was the first time in school history this happened. In 2013, Heritage High School finished 4th place at the Team Duals in Franklin, TN. Not only was it a first for Heritage, it was the highest ranking ever for any Blount County School. Skyler and his team elevated the respect for their school to an all-time level across the state of Tennessee and beyond. When Skyler died, there were approximately 1200-1500 people that attended his funeral. Wrestling teams from all over the county, the state, and even out of state traveled to Maryville to attend his memorial service. There were so many class mates and community members that attended that it was over-whelming. The out-pouring of support from Skyler’s peers, fellow athletes, class mates, friends, and strangers was truly something to see.
The purpose of the foundation is two-fold:
The first purpose of the foundation will be to establish a scholarship fund in Skyler Boring’s name. This scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to at least one worthy recipient in the local area. The scholarship guidelines will include several criteria including the recipient must be a well-respected high school wrestler in the Blount County community, they must have a GPA of at least 2.5, they must have a financial need for college assistance, they must have applied to any community college or university of their choice, they must have wrestled consistently throughout their high school career, they will preferably have been ranked in the top 10 in the state at some point during their school years, they need to demonstrate the ability to be a mentor to their peers and be an upstanding member of the community, active participation in the community is desired
The second purpose of the foundation will be to raise money to assist with wrestling team and cheerleading wrestling team expenses for the local Blount County Schools. As with most school systems, there are very limited funds for athletic events, but it is almost non-existent for wrestling. When our wrestlers go to meets outside of their own school, there isn’t even money to rent a bus much less pay for hotels, meals, registration fees, etc. Other schools show up in luxury tour buses and their wrestlers look like a million bucks while staying at the best hotels. Our wrestlers are car-pooled to events, and we have to put 10 to 12 kids in a room at the cheapest hotel we can find. This committee wants to change that. This our small way of trying to change that culture in our community as well as making sure this wonderful young man is not forgotten. Skyler’s mother, Amy Boring, has expressed the desire to build a wrestling cheerleading squad to support the Heritage High School wrestling team. She would like this squad to be open to any Heritage student with an interest and good grades no matter their financial situation. She has developed cheerleading squads in the past to support Skyler and his brother’s football and baseball teams. She has several years of education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in child development, psychology, and working with young children with special needs. This foundation hopes to be able to support her efforts in this area.
How money will be used:
The money raised will be used to award scholarships to one or more recipients on an annual basis prior to the end of the school year. If available, funds will also be used to cover expenses associated with the wrestling team and wrestling cheerleading programs which includes, but is not limited to, travel costs, hotels, meals, participation fees, equipment, mats, singlets, shoes, uniforms, etc.
What type of fund raising will be done:
We plan to fund raise in a variety of areas which will include, but is not limited to, signing up local businesses to be part of annual sponsorship programs; fund raisers such as car washes, pancake breakfasts, bake sales, runs, motorcycle rides, dinners, etc. In addition, we will also be selling memorabilia items such as t-shirts, hats, bracelets, etc. focusing on Skyler Boring and his life.
